Norton 2010
What is there to say, I have found that buying a new version of Norton from Amazon each year is less expensive than buying a "subscription" upgrade from Symantec itself for some reason.

While it is a bit of a "pain" to have to use the Norton Removal Tool before installing the new version, I like doing it since I end up with all the newest definitions, functions, and actaully save money doing it.

I had some trouble last year when the 2009 version also negated access to my MP3 player driver somehow, and I had a heck of a time getting everything working again. This year's version, no problem. Still Norton, still great virus protection, and an even better SONAR attack identifier included in the system.

Norton bullies it's customers
This time last year I purchased Norton Anti Virus 2009. Yesterday, using the handy "subscribe now" button in my current Norton dialog box I renewed my Norton Anti-virus software online. In doing so Norton signed me up to automatically renew my contract every year charging the credit card I used for this renewal. The only way I could opt out was to go to an entirely different website and using the ID and password I set up on the first site log on and find the cancel automatic renewal option and then endure another dialog box as I canceled it. They could have easily provided the option to opt out on the renewal website. Better yet it should have been an opt in option in the first place.

Then today, still stewing a bit about being bullied by Norton during the renewal process, I checked here to learn I could have purchased it new for $24.70 but instead had paid $39.99 for a renewal. It will be a cold day you know where when I buy Norton again, or for that matter, anything form it's parent company Symantec.


I don't like being bullied and abused. And abuse this is. I'm going with open source software next year. I've used it in the past with no problems.

Product disables itself unless you pay yearly renewal fees
I'm giving all Norton 2009 and 2010 antivirus products a 1-star because of their "software-as-rental" policies.

I thought the 1 year subscription period meant that automatic updates would no longer be provided, but that otherwise the product would continue to work OK.

Wrong.

The software stops working and disables itself, unless you pay the yearly renewal fees, which are much higher than so-called "buying" the next year's version.

Imagine if Windows stopped working, unless you kept paying yearly fees to Microsoft, forever.
